Loco Falls Greenline
Delivering Renewable Energy to Montanans Fingertips
Much of the Northwest’s electrical infrastructure is aging, and rising energy demand from population growth, economic development, and new industries is putting added strain on the grid. At the same time, more renewable energy is coming online, but limited transmission in Montana has constrained its full use. Expanding the transmission system is essential to modernize the grid, maintain reliability and resiliency, support renewable integration, and deliver power efficiently across the region.
The Loco Falls Greenline is being developed to strengthen Montana’s transmission system and enhance its connection to the broader regional grid. The line will extend from the Loco Mountain Substation in Meagher County to Great Falls, linking two major wind energy areas and providing an alternative route for electricity between southern and northern Montana. It will also improve regional interconnections, increasing access between the western United States and Canada and supporting a more resilient and flexible energy network.
